Miles Teller has a big request for his Top Gun: Maverick co-star Tom Cruise—if a third installment in the high-flying franchise ever takes off.
“I just told Tom, ‘Give me enough time, a heads-up so I can get in shape,'” Teller shared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on Wednesday. “‘One month per ab—I need six months’ notice.'”
Teller portrayed Lt. Bradley “Rooster” Bradshaw, the son of the late Goose (Anthony Edwards), in the 2022 sequel to the 1986 blockbuster Top Gun. Cruise reprised his role as Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in both films. While the original followed Maverick as a student at an elite flight school, the sequel focused on his role as an instructor training the next generation of pilots, including Rooster.
Jokingly, Teller told Colbert, “You might be shocked, but I do not greenlight that thing. I have nothing to do with it.”
When pressed about the possibility of more adventures in the Top Gun universe, Teller remained uncertain. “There’s a lot of enthusiasm from the fans, and a lot of enthusiasm from the creative side,” he said. “So we’ll see.”

Teller’s Top Gun: Maverick co-star Glen Powell, who played Jake “Hangman” Seresin in the sequel, hinted at a potential follow-up during an August conversation with Josh Horowitz. While he claimed to have a date for the sequel, he remained tight-lipped about any details. When asked to share more, Powell simply responded, “Absolutely not.”
Released in May 2022, Top Gun: Maverick was a massive box office success, raking in $1.48 billion globally and becoming the highest-grossing film of the year. The film delivered a heavy dose of nostalgia, packed with callbacks to the original 1986 movie, including a cameo from Val Kilmer’s Iceman and, of course, the iconic beach scene—complete with sunglasses, suntans, and abs galore. Featuring a star-studded cast, including Jennifer Connelly, Jay Ellis, and Jon Hamm, the sequel saw Maverick confronting his past while training the next generation of elite pilots.
Up next for Teller is The Gorge, a sci-fi horror thriller set to premiere on Apple TV+ on February 14. Described by Teller as “a love story under tension,” the film follows two operatives stationed on opposite sides of a gorge who are forced to team up for survival. The movie also stars Anya Taylor-Joy and Sigourney Weaver.
