Alan Cumming Says Couples ‘Always’ Ask Him to Perform the Romy and Michele Dance at Weddings: ‘Completely Bonkers’
Alan Cumming’s dance card is already full—no wedding requests needed.
The Scottish actor recently reflected on his experience filming Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion, telling Vanity Fair that it was one of the first scripts he read upon arriving in Hollywood. “I just thought, ‘I’ve got to be in this film,'” Cumming recalled.
One of the biggest reasons? The now-iconic final dance scene, in which he performs alongside Romy and Michele stars Lisa Kudrow and Mira Sorvino.
“People reenact this at their weddings,” Cumming shared. “People are always saying to me, ‘Will you come to my wedding and do the Romy and Michele dance with me and my husband or me and my wife?’ And I’m like, ‘No! I won’t!'”
Alan Cumming Reflects on Romy and Michele’s Iconic Dance Scene: ‘We Were Robbed’
The unforgettable dance sequence from Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion—where Romy (Mira Sorvino), Michele (Lisa Kudrow), and Sandy (Alan Cumming) perform an improvised three-way dance—remains one of the film’s most iconic moments.
In the film, Sandy, once Michele’s nerdy high school admirer, returns to the reunion rich and handsome, leading to the quirky, theatrical number that has since become legendary.
“It’s this iconic thing—hilarious and also completely bonkers—to be in the middle of a witty, rom-com-y film and suddenly have a dance sequence,” Cumming told Vanity Fair. “I loved it for that. It was a completely nuts thing to do.”
The scene was even nominated for Best Dance Sequence at the 1998 MTV Movie Awards, though it ultimately lost to Mike Myers’ “Soul Bossa Nova” routine from Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery.
“We were robbed,” Cumming joked.
Surprisingly, the scene wasn’t heavily scripted. “It was just a paragraph in the script—’Romy and Michele and Sandy do a modern interpretive dance,'” he explained. But that brief description resulted in one of the most memorable and rewatched moments in ‘90s comedy.

The long-awaited sequel to Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion was officially confirmed late last month, with Mira Sorvino and Lisa Kudrow reprising their titular roles—and this time, also serving as executive producers.
While details remain under wraps, Alan Cumming teased that he knows the storyline and is thrilled about it.
“I actually know what the story is, and it’s really good,” Cumming shared. “So I’m excited. I’m so excited to go back to it.”
Cumming confirmed that filming is expected to begin this summer. “I’m very excited because Mira, Lisa, and everyone—the band is getting back together,” he said. “This is one of those things that’s just so weird. But I love that it struck a chord. I really love that this is one of the films I’m in that’s sort of iconic.”
Cumming has long expressed interest in returning for a sequel. Speaking to Entertainment Weekly last year, he shared his enthusiasm for revisiting the beloved characters. “I think what’s great about the sequel to Romy and Michele is just going back to something that is so beloved and having a relationship with these characters again.”
